The Hidden Ways To Speed Up Your Computer

Finding ways to speed up your computer is the most important thing you can do as a PC user.However fast your computer is, there comes a time when you can’t help; want it to perform a little better. Who doesn’t want their computer to run like how it did on the day you bought it.Here is a comprehensive list of tweaks that can make to get your PC perform faster.

Delete the hibernation file

Do you know how hibernation thing works? When you hibernate your PC, all the data from your RAM (which stores all the stuff you’re doing) to the hard disk, so that when you turn your computer on again it could get it to the same working state. This data is stored in hiberfil.sys. But for some reason, that file stays in the hard drive forever. You can delete that file to free up some space and speed up your computer. You can locate this file on C: drive.

Load lesser program at startup

There is a bile list of unnecessary programs that starts running as soon as you have logged into your windows PC. Stuff like facebook messenger update, google update, picasa, winamp, adobe reader startup and other things that you don’t necessarily need at every startup, once stopped you can very easily sight the difference in the speed. Open up start menu and type msconfig, go to the startup tab and untick the programs you find unnecessary inorder to speed up your computer.

Defragment your pagefile

Windows introduced the virtual memory technology which basically is, using some gigabytes of your hard drive as RAM. So instead of defragmenting your whole system which takes ages, you can just defragment this file.You can use UltraDefrag and Auslogics Disk Defrag todo this task and  speed up your computer.

Don’t let the pagefile stay in its default location

It’s all about speed, if you happen to have two physical storage devices preferably of same speed, you can move your pagefile from your C:\ drive to that location.

For doing that, go to Control Panel, Click on System and Security (Category View), Click on System, see on the left pane, and click on Advanced system settings, go to the Advanced tab, again under the Advanced tab, find the pane Performance, find Virtual Memory, and click on Change.

Multiply your memory with ReadyBoost

ReadyBoost feature was made first available in Windows Vista and is there in many versions of Windows 7 as well. It’s a nice technology that lets you use your physical storage device such as your pen drive as RAM. Though, it’s not exactly as fast as RAM, but you can easily feel the significance difference. To activate this feature, first you need to plug in a physical device, let it auto-run. Select ‘Speed up my system’ from the auto-run dialogue.

Now, select ‘Dedicate this drive to ReadyBoost’ in the ReadyBoost property page. Click Ok and you’re set.

You will need at least 235 MB free space in the device to be able to use this feature and  speed up your computer.

Turn off Windows programs

There are many Windows feature that come pre-installed on your computer that you never use. But still, they are there occupying space on your Hard Drive and consuming your system’s memory.

Go to the Control Panel, Click on Uninstall or change a program, Click on Turn Windows features on or off and untick the things (like Internet Explorer) you don’t use.This step will really help you speed up your computer.

Disable Search Indexing

Windows Search functionality is one of the worst things on Windows. It takes ages to search for a file, and there are not many filtering options. You can install a 3rd party search app, such as Search Everything, or Google Desktop Search. Hence you also don’t need to index every file of your computer. To disable this feature, Go to start menu, type in services.msc, scroll down to the bottom and locate “Windows Search”, right click on it, and go to PROPERTIES. Check in the Startup type, and move scroll pane and select DISABLED.

Next time you reboot your computer, the indexing service will no longer be active, that will give you some resources back that otherwise wasn’t made available to you.

Delete ugly fonts

Many applications like Word, Picasa, Photoshop take some time to load the fonts, which obviously is a problem. Go to C:\Windows\Fonts and remove the ones you don’t like. Press ‘Delete’ to delete a font to speed up your computer.

Turn off Aero

Aero is cool, everyone loves the transparency effects. But if you want to let your PC work some more fast, you can turn this feature off. For doing this, get in to your desktop screen, right click your mouse button, select Personalize, Scroll down to ‘themes’ vox and Choose ‘Windows 7 Basics’ or ‘Windows Classic’ to speed up your computer.

Besides these tweaks, you should always defragment your hard drive, or get a SSD that will significantly improve your OS’s operation speed. Uninstall buggy toolbars, and unnecessary programs. For better data transfer speed across and over your Hard Drive, you can install applications like Tera Copy, and FastCopy.

Also, you can overclock your processor to a little higher value, but that is little complex and risky task, you can also install some 3rd part system optimizing tools like CCleaner, Tune Up utilities, Glary Utilities, System Mechanic. These tools features many advanced optimizing task like defragmenting your registry, cleaning your disk, finding the duplicate files, menu manager and other task that can really help you improve your systems performance. Besides, very often viruses and malwares slows down your PC. For that, use a good Security Suite such as AVG Security, F-Secure, Kaspersky Security, Eset Smart Security. Happy Computing!
