|Microsoft announced in the press release that they are given rights for facebook to purchase a portion of the patents that they recently purchased from AOL Inc for $1billion.
Only few weeks before Microsoft Purchased 925 patents and patent applications plus licences from AOL INC and today they sold 650 out of them to Facebook ; The number one social networking platform for $550 million.
Microsoft purchased a total of 952 patents from AOL recently for 1 billion and these patents are from online advertising, search, content generation and management, social networking, mapping, multimedia and streaming, and security categories.I think microsoft is trying to recover their spending for AOL patents with this move, but is it worth for those 650 patents.
Brad Smith, executive vice president of Microsoft told in the press release,
“Today’s agreement with Facebook enables us to recoup over half of our costs while achieving our goals from the AOL auction,” “As we said earlier this month, we had submitted the winning AOL bid in order to obtain a durable license to the full AOL portfolio and ownership of certain patents that complement our existing portfolio.”
It looks like MIcrosoft will spend the money from This patent deal to acquire the balance patent that AOL tInc not put for Auction.
